Here’s Everything you need to know about Mazda’s new Six-Cylinder engine.

As I mentioned so many times, Mazda likes doing things his way. When everybody invests in turbocompressors, hybrid technologies, and fuel cell powertrains, the Japanese manufacturer updates the 100-year-old concept, such as aerodynamics and fuel management. It turned out well for Mazda since its vehicles are more fun to drive and as fuel efficient as most competitors.

Mazda just unveiled the brand-new CX-90, which comes with it an entirely new powertrain in the form of a turbocharged in-line six-cylinder. It is odd for Mazda to develop a new six-cylinder, as everybody else’s cutting off on cylinders and displacement or switching to EV powertrains. I am not the one who will complain about this situation, and I am happy the Japanese manufacturer did it. Trust me; you’ll be satisfied when you see the numbers.

A New Powertrain

Mazda’s new engine is a 3.3-liter turbocharged in-line six-cylinder making 340 horsepower and 369 foot-pounds of torque. All that is combined into a mild hybrid system which makes things even better. This officially makes it the most powerful gas engine ever produced by the Japanese manufacturer.

These numbers are interestingly close to what you get with BMW 3.0-Liter in-line six-cylinder, which is the engine you find in the new Supra. I am not saying Mazda has any plan to put this new powertrain in a future sports car, but it’s precisely what I would do if I were working on a new performance car. Or course, Mazda said the engine was created especially for the large platform SUV, but it wouldn’t be the first time a truck/SUV engine ended up in a sports car.

According to Mazda, the horsepower and torque figures are achieved by using premium fuel. If the Japanese manufacturer mentioned it, this motor could also run on lower octane fuel. You can take the 2.5-Liter turbocharged four-cylinder as an example. This engine produces 227 horsepower and 310 foot-pounds of torque on regular fuel and 256 horsepower and 320 foot-pounds of torque on premium fuel.

Mazda CX-90

For now, Mazda chose to present us with this new engine thru the brand-new CX-90, which is a clever move from the Japanese manufacturer.

Most three-row SUV feels short of power, to be honest with you. Those that are offering a performance variant do it in a way so extreme it is not the exact vehicle anymore. Mazda’s new six-cylinder engine is not too powerful and is very refined, which should give a luxury feel to the CX-90 driving experience. This is exactly where prestigious brands are playing their game and therefore have gained so much popularity in the last few years.

Mazda hasn’t revealed the CX-90 performance figures yet, but that doesn’t really matter. With the number we already have, I can already tell you the CX-90 will offer a deliciously flat torque curve and a smooth and constant acceleration. As if it wasn’t enough, the CX-90 will benefit from the Cinematic Posture Control system, which helps remove the body roll felt in tight curves. The CX-90 promises to be quite a vehicle, especially paired with the new 3.3-liter six-cylinder engine.
