While the transition to electric vehicles may be challenging for some, there are manufacturers like Mercedes-Benz who excel in this endeavor. Just look at the EQS sedan to understand that Mercedes-Benz is not just adapting to the market. The German manufacturer is also raising the bar and setting the standards.

There are no major updates for the EQS sedan in 2024, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, as the car is still ahead of its time. The German sedan offers a plethora of options and features to make it even more desirable. In short, it’s the Mercedes-Benz experience at its best, nothing less.

Range and Pricing

Unfortunately, the Mercedes-Benz EQS is far from affordable for all budgets. At the same time, it is a prestige car reserved for the elite, which is why its starting price is $136,000 (2023). It’s important to note that this is the starting price, as everything depends on the options at Mercedes-Benz. If you opt for the 580 version, the price rises to $158,500 (2023). Finally, you will need to shell out at least $195,000 (2023) for the AMG version.

Category and Competition

The Mercedes-Benz EQS is a large electric luxury sedan, a category that has seen a huge rise in popularity in recent years. It must be said that Tesla was long the only major player in the segment, but the arrival of major brands has certainly shifted the balance. The Mercedes-Benz EQS stands out from the competition on many levels, notably thanks to its level of technology and its philosophy of ultimate comfort.

Rivals: Audi e-Tron GT, BMW i7, Genesis G80 EV, Jaguar I Pace, Lucid Air, Polestar 3, Porsche Taycan, Tesla Model S

Design and Technology

The German manufacturer has opted for a different design from the S-Class with the EQS, which is quite interesting. The car adopts a more compact look and smoother curves, which makes sense for an electric car. The idea behind this design is certainly to improve aerodynamics, but the car remains elegant nonetheless.

While the EQS sedan is beautiful on the outside, the interior is where the real show is. In addition to offering divine comfort, premium materials, and superior quality finishes, the German manufacturer's car features a fully digital dashboard. It is very impressive. In fact, you literally feel like you are in a car from the future, and this is something Mercedes-Benz has done very well compared to some of its competitors. Moreover, the German manufacturer’s sedan offers a very impressive level of technology.

Performance

The EQS sedan offers three mechanical options, starting with a first powertrain of 355 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. This is the 450 4MATIC version, which is perfect for those who prioritize comfort. Next is the 580 4MATIC version with 516 horsepower and 631 pound-feet of torque. This powertrain allows the German sedan to go from 0-100 km/h in just 4.1 seconds. The most impressive thing is that this is not even the most powerful version. If you want even more, there is the AMG EQS version with 649 horsepower and 700 pound-feet of torque. There is also a special mode that allows you to unlock 751 horsepower and 752 pound-feet of torque for a short moment. Thus, the sedan can achieve 0-100 km/h in less than 3.4 seconds.

As for the range, it all depends on the version you choose. The 450 and 580 versions offer a range of about 547 kilometers according to the manufacturer. The AMG version has a slightly lower range of 446 kilometers, mainly due to its high power.

Weaknesses

Its name is confusing as there is also an EQS SUV. The price increases quickly and even verges on the ridiculous. Sometimes, we miss the good old control buttons.

Strengths

It is among the most comfortable and luxurious electric cars on the market. Its performance is very impressive. It lacks nothing in terms of equipment.

Signature Element

The fully digital dashboard of the Mercedes-Benz EQS makes us feel like it’s 2034, not just 2024. It makes the driving experience of the car quite unique.

Final Word

To be perfectly honest, I find it hard to understand why the Mercedes-Benz EQS is so different from the S-Class, its gasoline equivalent. Both are excellent cars. However, you can’t choose one or the other just for its powertrain, as the design is also a key element. Anyway, it seems it was the right thing to do since both cars are very popular in their respective segments.
