Mercedes-Benz GLA 2024

The Mercedes-Benz GLA is the smallest SUV offered by the German manufacturer. However, it shouldn't be seen as an entry-level model because that's far from the case. You see, the Mercedes-Benz GLA isn't a vehicle you buy to get introduced to the brand. It's as well-equipped and enjoyable to drive as the other SUVs in the lineup; it's just smaller. All this to say that despite its size and price, the GLA allows you to experience the full Mercedes-Benz offering.

Although its complete redesign only dates back to 2021, the German manufacturer's SUV benefits from several improvements for 2024, including mild hybridization across multiple engines and an expanded range of options. The novelties don't stop there, as some aesthetic elements have been revised, and the digital dashboard with its two 10.25-inch screens is now offered as standard. You won't feel like anything is missing—until you open the options list and watch the bill inflate.

Range and Pricing

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLA lineup essentially consists of three main models. Firstly, there's the GLA250 version, focusing on comfort and the overall experience. However, don't be mistaken; it's capable of providing thrilling emotions. Its base price stands at $45,000, which is surprisingly low for a model of this kind. However, let me tell you that Mercedes-Benz has kept the best for the options list. You can easily raise the price by over $10,000 with just a few clicks. Next, we move on to the more docile of the two AMG versions. Ironically, the performance of the GLA 35 AMG is breathtaking, just like its starting price of $56,000. Finally, it's the 45 AMG version that sits at the top of the range with a starting price of $66,500. It's generally expensive, but it remains an excellent price considering the accompanying model's performance.

Category and Competition

The Mercedes-Benz GLA belongs to the luxury subcompact SUV category. It's a segment where the competition is less fierce than elsewhere. Some vehicles in this segment are genuinely entry-level models, making the 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLA stand out. Moreover, there are the AMG versions, which have hardly any equivalent in the competition.

Rivals: Alfa Romeo Tonale, Audi Q3, BMW X1, BMW X2, Buick Encore GX, Cadillac XT4, Jaguar E-Pace, Lexus UX, Mini Countryman, Volvo XC40

Design and Technologies

Once again, Mercedes-Benz has done an excellent job with the design of its compact SUV. The GLA is both elegant and dynamic. I must say I particularly like the proportions of this new generation. I didn't connect with the old GLA at all, but this one is a success across the board.

The interior of the GLA is also superb and very elegant. The driving position is comfortable, and the cabin remains very spacious for a vehicle of this size. Most impressively, the screen housing the dashboard and multimedia system stands out. There's also ambient lighting that elevates the dashboard to another level. The Mercedes-Benz GLA undoubtedly offers one of the most beautiful interiors in its category.

Performances

As you might have guessed, the 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLA offers three options in terms of mechanics. It's important to note that a mild hybrid system has been added to two of them this year. Let's begin with the 250 version, powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine. This engine generates 221 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. It's paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive is standard. This powertrain enables the GLA to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 6.7 seconds, which is quite rapid for a compact SUV.

Next up is the AMG 35 version, which also features a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine. However, the power output of this engine is significantly higher at 302 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Ultimately, this first AMG variant manages to achieve 0-100 km/h in less than 5.2 seconds. Consequently, the AMG 45 version is the most powerful of all with its 382 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque. It's also equipped with a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine. However, unlike the other two versions, there's no hybrid assistance here. Nonetheless, it's capable of completing the 0-100 km/h sprint in less than 4.4 seconds.

Weaknesses

The price of some options is simply ridiculous. The AMG 45 version might be too aggressive for everyday driving.

Strengths

It's a model that lacks nothing in terms of equipment and offers excellent value for money. Furthermore, it's a very enjoyable and reasonably spacious vehicle to drive.

Signature Element

The GLA might be the vehicle in the brand's lineup that gives you the most value for your money.

Closing Thoughts

The GLA is perfect for someone who wants to experience the best of Mercedes-Benz but in a more compact format. It's an essential model in the luxury vehicle segment. Although I've mentioned multiple times that it's not an entry-level model, it nonetheless remains the ideal vehicle to introduce yourself to the Mercedes-Benz range.
