Here’s a piece of excellent news coming from Ford since the American manufacturer started the production for the very awaited F-150 Lightning. If you have no idea about what this is, the new Lightning is not a modern version of the hero truck you saw in the first Fast and Furious, but it is, in fact, an all-electric version of the current F-150. If this sounds interesting, it’s because it is, and that’s basically why Ford decided to double the production target even before it started.

The customer version of the 2022 F-150 Lightning is scheduled to hit the market next spring. In the meanwhile, the American manufacturer started the pre-production process at its Rouge electric Vehicle Center in Michigan. And As I said, Ford had to double the production forecast, which led to more job creation. Ford also mentioned it invested more than 7.7 billion dollars in just in the State of Michigan since 2016, which helped create more and 4500 jobs.

Ford says there’s already more than 150 000 reservations for the 2022 F-150 Lightning, which is a lot since the initial production numbers were about 15 000 units for the 2022 model year. What this means is you will have to wait a year or more, probably even if you get your reservation today. In fact, Reuters think Ford will only produce 55 000 Lightning F-150 for 2023 and 80 000 more for 2024. This basically means the three first year of production is already reserved. That’s what we can call a good problem.

The microchip’s shortage situation

Like most vehicles available on the market today, the 2022 Lightning F-150 production could be affected by the microchip’s shortage. That is why Ford starts with a really low number (15 000 units) instead of promising every single person that made a reservation a delivery next spring.

On a long-term basis, Ford is expecting to sell at least 160 000 EV pickups per year which is a pretty high number, but we have to go there if we want to achieve our goal to sell only 0 emissions vehicles only. Well, that’s what the government wants us to believe, but if you want my opinion, that’s not what the future will look like.

I believe more in alternative solutions such as biofuel or hydrogen. First, batteries are very expensive to produce, and they require a ton of materials that are hard to extract. Of course, driving an electric vehicle isn’t bad for the environment. However, for its fabrication process, it’s a totally different story.
