Top 10 winter tire

The first snowfalls have started to cover Quebec, and if that's not enough of a reminder, know that it's now time to install your winter tires. There's no urgency since the deadline is December 1st this year, but appointment slots are usually filling up quickly around this time of the year, mainly because everyone heads to the garages at the same time.

For those who already have winter tires in good condition, there's no excuse. For others in need of a new set of tires, I forgive you, but a decision needs to be made quickly. That's why I've decided to help you with a selection of the best tires to face the winter of 2023-2024. There's no specific order because each tire has its strengths and weaknesses. Some models may not suit you at all while being perfect for someone else. However, the tires listed here offer an excellent quality-to-price ratio, and that's why they have been chosen.

Vredestein Wintrac Xtreme S

As you probably know, prices have significantly risen in almost every aspect of society, including tires. Unfortunately, affordable options are becoming scarce. That's why I decided to start with the Vredestein Wintrac Xtreme S. It's a tire that can be obtained for around $130, depending on the dimensions. It offers several qualities in terms of both rolling silence and performance. However, it has its limits and is unfortunately not known for its durability. Thus, it's a bit to avoid if you cover a lot of kilometers each year.

Nokian Hakkapeliitta 10

It's not by chance that the Nokian Hakkapeliitta is on my list every year. In my opinion, it's one of the best winter tires you can get. It performs well on both ice and snow, is quiet, and very durable. Its price is in the right average, as it can be obtained for under $200 in most available sizes.

BFGoodrich Winter T/A KSI

The Winter T/A KSI provides maximum traction on snow and mud. It evacuates water well and is also very durable. It's the ideal type of tire for city driving where snow tends to melt quickly, creating significant water accumulations.

Michelin X-Ice Snow

The Michelin X-Ice Snow is one of the most durable tires on the market with an estimated lifespan of 60,000 km. It is designed for both snow and ice, as the name suggests. This tire offers unparalleled rolling comfort. The only small downside is its price, which hovers around $300 depending on the size. It's one of the most expensive tires on the market, but it's also one of the best in its category.

Yokohama IceGuard IG53

While most winter tires excel on snow, few are specifically designed for ice. As the name suggests, the Yokohama IceGuard IG53 is particularly effective on slippery surfaces. It is one of the safest tires on the market.

Pirelli Ice Zero FR

Pirelli is a brand primarily associated with performance, rightfully so as they equip Formula 1 cars. Nevertheless, the brand has also developed a winter tire specifically designed for Nordic countries like Canada. The Pirelli Ice Zero FR is perfect for heavy snow accumulations. Some even compare its performance to studded tires, even though it is not studded.

Firestone Winterforce 2

I'll be honest with you because I checked with my fellow journalists, and very few seem willing to recommend Firestone. Well, they seem to believe that the manufacturer doesn't deserve a spot in the top 10. In my opinion, it's the opposite, and the Firestone Winterforce 2 has strong arguments in its favor. It performs well in snow and mud, offering an excellent quality-to-price ratio.

Toyo Observe G3-ICE

Toyo is undoubtedly one of the most reputable tire manufacturers globally, and for good reason. The Observe G3-ICE is a tire particularly effective in mud or when there is a lot of water on the road. It's a durable tire and highly appreciated in extreme situations.

Cooper Evolution Winter

Cooper may not be the most well-known tire brand in Quebec, but it should not be overlooked. The Evolution Winter tire is also very effective on icy roads and wet surfaces. Its aggressive contact surface provides traction even in thick snow. It's a tire that starts to get a bit pricey, with a slightly higher price tag of over $200.

Goodyear Ultragrip Performance

This tire has been specially designed for SUVs, and its performance is outstanding. It offers excellent braking distance and is particularly adept in snowy conditions. Its price is high, around $250, but it remains an excellent option, especially if safety is one of your priorities.
