There are battles in the automotive industry that are fiercer than others, and the compact SUV category for the general public is undoubtedly one of the most important. It's a niche where you find the most popular models from various manufacturers. The format, price range, level of technology—compact SUVs offer a combination of elements that appeal to a wide range of potential buyers.

With such intense competition, one might imagine that anything goes, but that's not quite the case. Some manufacturers focus on diversity, while others concentrate on a single engine type and specific skills. In any case, balance is crucial for success. It's certain that models offering more choices have gained considerable popularity over the years, but that doesn't make the others any less interesting. To be honest, creating a Top 10 in this category is particularly challenging each year simply because each model has strong arguments in its favor. In my opinion, there's no compact SUV that is significantly lagging behind. Ultimately, it's all a matter of taste.

10 — Chevrolet Equinox 2024/GMC Terrain 2024

Although they may appear different, the Chevrolet Equinox and the GMC Terrain share many elements. Both American SUVs offer many appealing qualities. They are among the most comfortable models in their category, and their interior is surprisingly spacious.

9 — Volkswagen Tiguan 2024

I regularly recommend the Volkswagen Tiguan. It has numerous advantages, with an impressive cargo volume. However, what consistently impresses me about this German manufacturer's SUV is its level of finishing and its overall driving experience. Sometimes, it feels like you're behind the wheel of an Audi model, and that is very impressive.

8 — Subaru Forester 2024

While Subaru is often associated with sports cars, it's easy to forget that the Japanese manufacturer also offers excellent SUVs. The Forester is the perfect companion for adventurers who enjoy venturing off the beaten path. The Wilderness version is particularly competent in this regard.

7 — Mazda CX-50 2024

The CX-50 is part of Mazda's onew generation of models, and it's a vehicle that has consistently impressed us since its introduction to the market. It stands out as one of the most enjoyable compact SUVs to drive, and it never fails to turn heads.

6 — Nissan Rogue 2024

The Nissan Rogue is one of those vehicles that prioritizes simplicity. While its lineup might be less impressive than that of its competitors, the Rogue remains interesting. It's a well-balanced model that seldom presents unpleasant surprises.

5 — Mitsubishi Outlander 2024

The new-generation Mitsubishi Outlander has everything to offer. It's also one of the few models in its category available with a third row of seats, which can make a significant difference for families.

4 — Hyundai Tucson 2024/Kia Sportage 2024

Hyundai and Kia are manufacturers that generally give you more value for your money, and the Korean SUV duo is no exception. They are particularly interesting in terms of design and also in the technologies they offer.

3 — Toyota RAV4 2024

The Toyota RAV4 essentially provides everything that the Ford Escape does and even more. So, why does it end up in 3rd place? To be honest, it's a matter of personal preference here. While the RAV4 has a lot to offer on paper, I'm not a big fan of its infotainment system. In my opinion, the finishing could be better, and the comfort could be optimized. That being said, the RAV4 remains the top choice in its category, especially since it offers by far the best resale value.

2 — Honda CR-V 2024

It's clear that brand enthusiasts would have wanted the CR-V to be in the first position. Believe me, I'm eagerly waiting for that too, but Honda still has some ground to cover even though the CR-V sells better than the Escape. The Japanese manufacturer has already taken a huge step forward by adding a hybrid version to the lineup. With an off-road version and a PHEV variant, the CR-V would certainly dominate the competition.

1 — Ford Escape 2024/Ford Bronco Sport 2024

For me, the Ford Escape checks all the boxes. It's the SUV that best meets the needs of all buyers, and that too at a very reasonable price range. The new Escape lineup is more enticing than ever. As for the Bronco Sport, it's based on the same platform as the Escape, which is why I include it here. It's essentially the compact SUV with the best off-road driving capabilities. Thus, one can say that Ford offers everything needed in this format, and that's why both SUVs from the American manufacturer are still at the top this year.
