Let me tell you that my opinion on the Mercedes-Benz GLB is a bit biased as it is one of my favorite vehicles. It's a model I have never owned, but I seriously consider acquiring one someday. What attracts me to this small SUV from the German manufacturer is its balance and great versatility, not to mention its off-road capabilities and robust design. The Mercedes-Benz GLB is also one of the few luxury SUVs that the average person can afford. Additionally, the quality of service from the manufacturer is impeccable.

There are no major updates planned for the GLB 2023, but it's not a problem since the model is still up to date.

Range and Price

While the Covid-19 crisis had a bombshell effect on the prices of new vehicles, the Mercedes-Benz GLB has clearly remained unchanged. Even in 2023, its starting price is $48,900, while the average selling price of a new vehicle is over $45,000 across all categories. However, it should be noted that we're dealing with a luxury model here, and maintenance costs are generally higher. Not to mention the fact that Mercedes-Benz offers countless expensive optional packages. It's quite easy to increase the bill by tens of thousands of dollars.

250 – $48,900

AMG 35 – $61,700

Category and Competition

The Mercedes-Benz GLB is considered a subcompact luxury SUV, but its size and practicality allow it to compete with many compact luxury SUVs. It's a model that suits almost any situation.

Rivals: Alfa Romeo Tonale, Audi Q3, BMW X1, BMW X2, Buick Encore GX, Cadillac XT4, Jaguar E-Pace, Lexus UX Mini Countryman, Volvo XC40.

Design and Interior

I must say that I really like the design of the Mercedes-Benz GLB, which is reminiscent of the old GLK. This square and robust look suits the small SUV from the German manufacturer very well, setting it apart from the more rounded bodies of the GLA and GLC. The GLB is also more spacious and accommodating than other models of similar dimensions, and that applies to the competition as well. Furthermore, the GLB offers one of the most beautiful interiors in the market. Mercedes-Benz has been very innovative in this regard.

Technologies

The Mercedes-Benz GLB was one of the first models to benefit from the MBUX system as standard. It integrates the dashboard and multimedia system on the same platform, giving the impression of a wide and continuous screen. The GLB also offers sophisticated ambient lighting, but it is an optional feature. As for the rest, this SUV from the German manufacturer is equipped with cutting-edge technologies in terms of safety and entertainment.

Performance

The Mercedes-Benz GLB 2023 offers two mechanical options, starting with a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. It delivers a power output of 221 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, which is slightly below average. However, the driving experience of the model remains very pleasant thanks to the behavior of this engine and especially because it is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. Of course, all-wheel drive is standard. This modest power output also has a very positive impact on the average fuel consumption of the model, which stands at only 10.9 L/100 km in the city and 7.9 L/100 km on the highway.

If you want a more dynamic driving experience, there is the AMG 35 version, which is also powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive as standard. However, the power has been significantly increased to 302 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. The model also benefits from numerous technical improvements, particularly in terms of suspension and braking system. As a result, it feels like you're behind the wheel of a completely different vehicle.

Weak Points

Some option packages need to be combined, which quickly increases the bill. The 7-seat configuration is perfect for emergencies but not ideal for a large family on a daily basis.

Strong Points

It offers an exceptional value for money. Its design is both friendly and serious. Its interior is sophisticated and modern, with a huge horizontal screen. The cabin is very spacious, and the driving position is particularly pleasant. The GLB also offers advanced technologies and a modern finish that cannot be found in any other vehicle in this price range.

Signature Element

The Mercedes-Benz GLB 2023 plays on multiple fields at once. It is a luxury vehicle, but it also offers a certain level of off-road driving capabilities. Moreover, it is one of the few vehicles in its category that offers up to 7 seats. Add to that its attractive price, and you have the ultimate SUV, nothing less.

Final Word

The Mercedes-Benz GLB is a legitimate luxury SUV, even in its base version. To be honest with you, I struggle to understand how the German manufacturer manages to offer an SUV of this caliber for less than $50,000. Thus, you can literally get the model for the same price as a mainstream compact SUV with a bit of equipment, and that's bewildering. Finally, it is clear that Mercedes-Benz compensates with options for the GLB, but it is a vehicle that remains exceptional for what it is. In my opinion, it is one of the few vehicles that truly offers more than it costs.
