Fiat 500: A Hybrid Version

06 June 2024 BY Jean-Sébastien Poudrier

The Fiat 500 is making its return to Canada this year as a small electric car. Unfortunately, the little Italian city car has failed to build a strong reputation since its introduction to the North American market in 2011. The Fiat 500 was very popular at first, but numerous reliability issues and a more limited dealer network compared to other Stellantis brands led to declining sales over the years.

Despite this, the Italian manufacturer has decided to take a chance with a 100% electric version of its small car. The idea is sound because there are very few small electric cars in North America. However, the demand has not been as strong as Fiat hoped, which is also the case in other markets where this version is available. It's worth noting that it is not the most affordable car in its segment either. This is why Fiat is exploring new solutions.

A Hybrid Version

Carlos Tavares, the president of the brand, announced that a hybrid version will soon be assembled at the Melfi plant in Italy. This version is expected to be marketed in the first quarter of 2026, which is still a ways off.

For now, this new version of the little Italian city car will feature a mild hybrid system. The offer is very interesting, but the Italian manufacturer has not confirmed anything regarding North America at this time. Therefore, there's no need to get excited just yet, as we don't even know if the car will be available in Canada.

Fiat 500e

In the meantime, you can still opt for the electric Fiat 500, which is available here. In fact, it is currently only offered at dealerships in Quebec and British Columbia.

Interestingly, the Fiat 500 has a starting price of under $40,000 before delivery and preparation fees, making it the most affordable electric car in Canada. Additionally, once government rebates are applied, its final price is $31,753 before taxes, which makes it particularly appealing. However, it should be noted that its maximum range is around 227 kilometers on a full charge, which is significantly below average. Therefore, the Fiat 500e is perfect as a second car or for those who spend most of their time in the city.
