Tesla Model Y: The Best-Selling Vehicle on the Planet in 2023

30 January 2024 BY Jean-Sébastien Poudrier

As is the case every year at this time, we analyze the data from 2023 to see which vehicles stood out in their respective categories and also in the overall market. Of course, one of the data points that interests us the most is which model was the most popular globally! Well, as you may have read in the title, it's the Tesla Model Y that dominated this category last year.

I know, the news is quite surprising, but it is indeed the case. The American manufacturer managed to sell 1.23 million units of its Model Y in 2023. Toyota is not far behind with 1.07 million units for the Rav4. The Corolla, which is the world's all-time best-selling car, also managed to surpass the million units sold mark.

Well-deserved success

Tesla has built a solid reputation over the years, and the American manufacturer continues to make headlines, both for its eccentric founder and its cutting-edge technologies. Tesla vehicles are not just electric vehicles. Their concept is unique, and that's what makes them so attractive to buyers.

The Tesla Model Y is relatively new in the American manufacturer's lineup, which may explain why so many people flocked to the model last year. Moreover, it is an SUV, and this vehicle category has been gaining popularity for years at the expense of cars. Finally, Tesla adjusted the price of the Model Y several times this year, which certainly motivated buyers to choose this model. Ultimately, regardless of what explains the model's success, what matters is the result.

We know that the popularity of the Model Y was very strong on the old continent last year. In the United States, the American SUV managed to position itself behind the F-Series, the RAM truck, the Silverado and Sierra duo, as well as the Rav4. Sales figures for Canada have not been released yet, but like you, I am eager to find out where the Tesla Model Y stands.

The rise in popularity of electric vehicles is starting to be felt, and the global sales result of the Tesla Model Y in 2023 is proof of that. In my opinion, it's only a matter of time before a Tesla model surpasses one of the three American trucks in terms of sales in North America.
