What is the fastest SUV in 2024?

09 January 2024 BY Jean-Sébastien Poudrier

The more time passes, the more the last letter of the acronym SUV begins to take on importance. For some years now, certain manufacturers seem to have taken on the mission of creating utility sports vehicles that are increasingly powerful and faster. Brands like Ferrari and Lamborghini are now offering SUVs capable of outperforming the vast majority of all the sports and exotic cars they have produced throughout their history.

The fact is that the competition is becoming more serious, with new players being added to the category each year. The number of SUVs whose performance exceeds that of the vast majority of sports cars currently available on the market borders on the ridiculous. Moreover, we're not just talking about exotic brands here, as manufacturers like Ford, Dodge, and General Motors now offer performance SUVs.

The fastest

We all know that the highest speed limit is 100 kilometers per hour in Quebec on the road. Some acceleration tracks allow you to reach over 160 km/h if they are long enough. In short, there are few places where one can truly and safely test the limits of their vehicle. Therefore, the maximum speed is by far the most useless data. Nevertheless, manufacturers place a lot of importance on it because it sells.

The same goes for acceleration. Unless you have to go from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour as quickly as possible to merge onto the busiest highway in the world without getting caught, once again, this year brings nothing relevant, but it remains one of the most important characteristics for buyers, especially in the sports vehicle niche.

Let's talk a bit about these SUVs whose top speed would make most sports cars blush. We'll divide it all into two categories. First, there's top speed, and then there's acceleration.

Regarding top speed, what we want to know is which SUV can reach the highest speed. Believe me, you'll be surprised by the figure because SUVs aren't usually very aerodynamic. Yet, this one is capable of reaching a maximum speed of 310 kilometers per hour. Well, I should rather say these, as there are two SUVs capable of achieving such a feat on the market. First, there's the Aston Martin DBX, powered by a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 that produces 697 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque in its ultimate configuration. For the second model, it's the Ferrari Purosangue. This one relies on a V12 6.5-liter engine that develops 715 horsepower and 528 pound-feet of torque.

As for the SUV that accelerates the fastest, one might think that the Ferrari Purosangue or the Aston Martin DBX are also present, but that's not the case. It's not the Lamborghini Urus either, as these three SUVs complete the 0-100 sprint in 3.3 seconds. So, what vehicle could be faster than three of the most formidable SUVs on the market? Imagine this: the Tesla Model X is capable of completing the 0-100 in less than 2.6 seconds, making it the fastest SUV in terms of acceleration.
